The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s fourth annual Winter Music Festival will be a three-week celebration of Mozart’s masterpieces and influence. The festival kicks off on Thursday, January 19, and concludes on Sunday, February 5.

The festival (#MozartFest) is anchored by DSO performances of six different programs in Orchestra Hall conducted by Music Director Leonard Slatkin. These will feature Mozart’s final six symphonies, several concertos featuring soloists from the DSO ranks, the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the lesser-known Concertone, and a variety of overtures from the composer’s operas.

Other festival events include a group yoga session set to Mozart music as part of the Om @ The Max series, an all-day marathon of every Mozart piano sonata, a chamber music recital at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Commerce Township, two film screenings of the Mozart documentary In Search of Mozart, late-night opera performances featuring performers from Interlochen and Opera MODO, and more. The festival will close with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem by the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra, featuring The University Choir from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, in a concert presented by the DSO’s Wu Family Academy.

The DSO is thrilled to welcome Mozart expert Kathryn Libin, associate professor of music at Vassar College, who will give pre-concert lectures and contribute to events as the official scholar of the Mozart Festival.

Six Mozart Festival concerts (one performance of each Orchestra Hall program) will be webcast for free via the DSO’s Live from Orchestra Hall series, presented by the Ford Motor Company Fund and made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. DSO fans can view the webcasts anywhere, on any device, at dso.org/live.
